This campaign was developed in the fall of 2021 by the Center for Zero Waste Design and WXY. The Center for Zero Waste Design is a non-profit working to develop and implement design strategies, within buildings and public space, to help cities equitably achieve zero waste. We led the development of the Zero Waste Design Guidelines, which looked at best practice strategies from NYC and other cities across the globe, and brought stakeholders together to develop a comprehensive set of design strategies and resources to reduce and better manage waste.
WXY is a design studio recognized for its dedication to engaging, improving and honoring public space. We work to understand a context, and plan with community in mind. We challenge ourselves to face the array of complex design problems and commit to solutions that forward a healthy and sustainable future.
Between us, we have spent decades designing buildings and public spaces, and planning how best to manage waste within them. We understand how the city’s urban form and waste collection history have led to the current system, which has so many negative impacts on the city. Many of the best ways to manage waste in buildings or public spaces are not possible with NYC’s outdated and inefficient collection system. This has led us to develop this vision plan, outlining how the city can transform its interconnected waste management system, so that all New Yorkers can enjoy vibrant streetscapes, healthy neighborhoods, and clean sidewalks.

The coalition of supporters is a broad spectrum of organizations including compost organizations, former DSNY Commissioners, businesses, architects, urban planners, designers, micro-haulers, developers, and non-profit advocacy organizations.
We believe it is time for NYC to develop an affordable and efficient waste management system so that all New Yorkers can easily reduce and separate their waste.
We are calling on NYC leaders to develop and implement the “Put Waste to Work” vision plan to make the city cleaner, greener, and more resilient, and to eliminate the inequitable impacts of current waste management practices.
