Freeze Food Waste Collection Again? We’ve Got to Do Better Than That.
March 9th, 2022: a new article by Clare Miflin in Urban Matters, a publication of the New School's Center for New York City Affairs, calls for the rethinking and modernization of the City's system for waste collection. The article asks the City's Climate Leadership team to lead the development of a Solid Waste Management Plan that is comprehensive and evidence-based, to help the City meet its climate, livability and equity goals.
In particular the following measures are recommended:
1. Improve efficiency of garbage trucks by shifting to semi-automated trucks, eliminating hand-loading of waste
2. Quicken the rollout of containerized bins, including for organic waste
3. Encourage installation of aerobic biodigesters in large apartment buildings
4. Expand and evaluate the wider benefits of community-based composting
5. Fund the implementation and evaluation of pilot programs to trial new approaches in advance of the Solid Waste Management Plan.
